Sporta - an AI-native bank for the UK's sports and community organizations
Sporta is an AI-native challenger bank transforming the UK sports and leisure sector by simplifying finances for clubs and communities. Discover why this innovative approach is the FinTech of My Choice.
When I built a bank for immigrants, I learned a simple thing. Money is the same, but the way people use it is completely different.
Fintech of my choice: Sporta
Sporta is an AI-native challenger bank built for the UK’s sports, leisure, and wellbeing sector. This is a big market, around £100 billion, but it is still treated like “just another SME segment” by most banks.
The founder is Andrew Smith, one of the co-founders of ClearBank. He is not coming from a branding or marketing angle. He is coming from the hard side of banking, infrastructure, compliance, and how you actually ship a regulated product.
Sporta started with the people who keep local sport alive. Clubs, community organisations, and the athletes around them. Their world is full of small, annoying financial moments. Subscription payments, match-day income, equipment purchases, facility bookings, travel, reimbursements, coaches getting paid, and always the question of who controls the account when volunteers change.
They raised £123k on Crowdcube to build the MVP, and they plan to submit their UK banking licence in 2026. I like the focus here. Get something real in the hands of clubs first, then go after the big regulatory step when the product is already grounded in daily use.
The part that made me stop and reread is the ownership angle. Sporta wants to turn participants into owners. If they can make fans and members feel like “this is our bank”, that is more than a gimmick. It can become a distribution moat, because communities in sport are sticky in a way most niches are not.
Also interesting is how they position themselves as AI-native. In a niche bank, AI is not about flashy chatbots. It is about making messy admin simpler. Categorising club spending, forecasting cash flow around seasons, and giving the treasurer fewer spreadsheets to maintain.

If Sporta nails the basics, accounts, payments, and tools that actually match club life, I can see it becoming the default financial home for a whole category. And I would love to watch a community bank model work again, but with modern Rails.
If your local club had its own bank, what would you want it to do on day one: easier member payments, better cashflow planning, or shared ownership for the community?
