Pine Labs - Revolutionizing Offline-First Commerce with a Checkout Operating System

Payments are easy until the merchant counter gets messy.

Pine Labs built the “checkout operating system” for offline-first commerce in India and beyond. Think card acceptance, UPI, store-based EMIs, and value-added services running on its devices and software, so a retailer can sell a phone today and get paid in a clean, bank-friendly way.

It monetizes like infrastructure. Transaction processing fees, device rentals (Device-as-a-Service), and a growing slice of subscription-style revenue tied to its installed base. In Q3 FY26, it reported 1.93 million digital checkout points and 1.05 million merchants, with 27% of revenue linked to subscriptions from those checkout points.

The business is getting sharper financially too. Pine Labs swung to a net profit of ₹42.4 crore in Q3 FY26 on ₹744.27 crore revenue, up 23.7% year over year, after years where growth came with red ink.

The founder story is classic India fintech plumbing: started in 1998 by Lokvir Kapoor, Rajul Garg, and Tarun Upadhyay, then scaled into a category-defining merchant stack under CEO Amrish Rau. Capital followed the rails, with over $1B raised from names like Peak XV (Sequoia India), Temasek, PayPal, Mastercard, Fidelity, and BlackRock, and a long runway of M&A (gift cards, SME devices, consumer discovery) to widen the funnel.

Why now: regulators and networks pushed digital payments into every neighborhood, but merchants still need affordability and reconciliation at the counter, not just QR codes. Pine Labs is one of the few players that can bundle hardware, software, and credit-led “pay in parts” into one repeatable distribution machine, which is why it keeps showing up as a FinTech of the Day pick curated by FinBox Solutions.
