Payhawk - Streamlining Spend Management for Europe's Mid-Market Companies

Finance teams don’t need more cards, they need control.

Payhawk sells “spend management” to mid-market companies across Europe. Think corporate cards plus expense claims plus accounts payable, wrapped into one workflow that the CFO can actually police.

It starts with simple things employees like. Virtual and physical cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, fast reimbursements, receipts captured on the go. Then it turns into the stuff finance cares about. Approval flows, limits, categories, and clean exports into ERPs like NetSuite, Xero, QuickBooks, and Microsoft Dynamics.

The business model is a mix of SaaS and payments economics. Companies pay a subscription, issue cards, and run their spend through Payhawk. Payhawk also used a sharp growth hook early on. 3% cashback on POS spend, capped at the subscription price, which flips “another tool” into “this might pay for itself.”

Investors bought the story early and big. Payhawk raised a $20M Series A led by QED, then a $112M Series B led by Greenoaks in November 2021, then added $100M more in early 2022 led by Lightspeed, pushing it to a $1B valuation.

The founders are Hristo Borisov (CEO) and Boyko Karadzhov (CTO), with roots in Bulgaria and a very European wedge. Win the messy multi-entity, multi-currency reality that US-first spend tools often underplay, and you get durable accounts with real switching costs.

This is a FinTech of the Day pick because the category is getting crowded, but the buyer is staying the same. CFOs want fewer vendors, tighter policy, and less month-end chaos. Spend management is turning into the operating system for procurement, AP, and cards, not a nice-to-have expenses app.
