Jet Bank - Albania's first digital-only bank for people and small businesses

Last year, I was at a Dua Lipa concert and caught myself thinking about Albania, not the setlist. I kept coming back to one simple question: in which countries is a real digital-only bank still missing?

Fintech of my choice: Jet Bank

Jet Bank is going after a very specific gap. It wants to be Albania’s first digital-only bank, built mobile-first for people and small businesses who are still living in a cash-heavy routine.

What I like is the speed and the pragmatism. Jet Bank is partnering with Backbase for the digital engagement layer, and CEO Fatbardha Rino says they can go from concept to user acceptance testing in three months, and to full launch in six. That is the kind of timeline you need if you want to change behavior, not just publish a roadmap.

The initial product set is also the right “starter pack” for a new bank. Current accounts, cards, and personalised financial products, running on a cloud-native core with local partnerships. In markets like this, distribution is not billboards. It is a clean onboarding flow, stable payments, and support that answers like a human.

The economics are not mysterious either. Interchange on cards, and loan margins when they start lending. The moat is a low-cost digital infrastructure, not a fancy slogan. In a country where around 60% of transactions are still cash-based, the biggest win is simply getting someone to trust the app enough to make it their default.

Zoom out, and the market is not tiny. Albania’s banking market is estimated at about €15 billion, and Jet Bank is backed by investors focused on South-Eastern Europe. I have built consumer finance products before, and the pattern is always the same. The first digital bank that feels local, not imported, gets a real chance to become the daily money app.

I am genuinely curious to watch Jet Bank’s first months after launch, because the early cohort will tell the truth about Albania’s appetite for an app-only bank. If the basics work, the rest of the roadmap becomes much easier.

What do you think is the hardest part of launching a digital-only bank in a cash-first country: trust, KYC onboarding, cards and acceptance, or lending?
