Last year, I was at a Dua Lipa concert, and somehow my brain drifted to Albania, not the setlist. I kept coming back to a simple thought: in which countries is a real app-only bank still missing?

Jet Bank is going after that gap. The ambition is clear. Become Albania’s first digital-only bank, built mobile-first for people and small businesses who are still living in a cash-heavy routine.

This is the kind of market where “digital transformation” is not a slogan. It is whether onboarding is clean, payments are stable, cards work everywhere they should, and support answers like a human.

I like the speed and the pragmatism here. Jet Bank is partnering with Backbase for the digital engagement layer. CEO Fatbardha Rino says they can go from concept to user acceptance testing in three months, and to a full launch in six. That timeline matters if you want to change habits, not just publish a roadmap.

The initial product set is the right starter pack for a new bank: current accounts, cards, and personalised financial products, running on a cloud-native core with local partnerships.

The business model is also refreshingly straightforward. Interchange on cards first. Loan margins when lending starts. The moat is low-cost digital infrastructure and great execution, not a fancy slogan.

And there is a real “why now” behind it. In a country where around 60% of transactions are still cash-based, the biggest win is simply getting someone to trust the app enough to make it their default. Albania’s banking market is estimated at about €15 billion, so this is not a tiny sandbox either.

One more reason I am happy to see Jet Bank here: this week’s winner comes from the fintech of my choice picks. It is a good sign when a familiar neobank model finds a new market where it actually makes sense. Honestly, I would love to visit Albania and try the service myself. Good luck to the team.
