Float Financial - Transforming Corporate Spend Management for Canadian SMBs

Canadian SMBs still run spend on spreadsheets and hope.

Float Financial sells corporate cards plus spend management built for Canada, where the big banks still make “getting a company card” feel like a mortgage application. It issues cards in CAD and USD, and wraps it with receipts, approvals, and controls so finance teams can actually close the month.

The trick is underwriting and workflow in one place. Float sets spending power off a company’s cash position and financial health, not a founder’s personal guarantee, then turns every swipe into categorized, policy-checked data that lands cleanly in accounting.

They make money the Brex way. Interchange on card spend, plus SaaS revenue from the platform, and more wallet-share as customers move bill pay and business cash workflows onto Float.

In January 2025, Float raised a US$48.5M Series B led by Goldman Sachs Growth Equity, bringing total funding to about US$92.6M since the 2020 start. The positioning is simple: be the “modern spend stack” for Canadian companies that earn in CAD but increasingly spend, hire, and buy software in USD.

CEO and co-founder Rob Khazzam (ex Uber Canada GM, and earlier private equity) is building for a market that is structurally underserved. Canada has great banks, but not great fintech primitives for SMB finance teams, and that gap gets louder every time FX fees, cross-border subscriptions, and remote teams hit the P&L.

FinBox Solutions picked Float because it’s not trying to be a bank in PowerPoint. It’s turning a boring pain, cards, reimbursements, invoices, into a daily habit with real switching costs.

If you run a Canadian business, would you replace your bank card stack with a single CAD plus USD spend platform, or is bank inertia still too strong?
