Column Tax - Transforming Tax Filing into an Embeddable API for Fintech Apps

Taxes are still stuck in once-a-year mode.

Column Tax turns tax filing into an API that fintech apps can embed. Instead of sending users to a clunky external flow, partners drop in Column’s SDK and let customers file federal and state returns inside the product.

The pitch is simple. More completed returns, fewer drop-offs, and a better reason for users to stay top of wallet with their banking or gig app.

They make money like infrastructure should. Partners pay standard API pricing, typically per-file based on volume, and Column handles the full stack from data ingest to IRS and state-formatted outputs.

The company says it is an IRS Authorized e-File Provider, SOC 2 certified, and has historically run at 99.999%+ uptime. On its site, Column claims it can get a partner from zero to accepted returns in one week or less.

Column Tax was founded in 2021. CEO Gavin Nachbar and CTO Michael Bock previously worked at Waymo, and the company has raised about $27M total, including a $21.7M Series A led by Bain Capital Ventures, with participation from firms like Felicis, Core Innovation Capital, Operator Partners, and South Park Commons.

This matters now because distribution has shifted. The tax app is increasingly popular among financial app already own the user’s income data, gig income, spending categories, and direct deposit.
